restoring your soul’s hygiene

Rancid, burdened and shackled

Excrement, open sewers, and decomposing refuse permeate the atmosphere. A mound of soiled, acrid clothes commingles with the prevailing foul olfactory setting. Surrounded by prevalent decay, musty dampness, and the smell of mildew, a woman moves with a heavy gait, oblivious to the unhygienic conditions. Her rancid breath adds to her personal atmosphere, which is coated with grime and sweat, blending into the revolting stench.

In the gloomy darkness, the woman approaches another woman who is bent over a barrel. Together the two women undertake the gruelling task of soaking, scrubbing and beating heavily soiled clothes. The noxious stench intensifies as the women dunk the clothes—saturated with atmospheric dirt, skin oils, dead cells, sweat and stains—in urine known for its ammonia content, to remove blood stains. While performing this burdensome task, the women speak in hushed tones, exchanging information about the latest victims to fall prey to the sexual predators. The feigned sympathy they expressed towards the young victims gradually turns to victim-blaming and shaming—a coping mechanism to deny their extended sexual abuse and to remain safeguarded by the tall, thick walls of denial.

The stench of secrecy and shame, which forms the fabric of their existence, unifies with the setting. The women slosh in filthy water, attempting to remove the accumulated stains, transferring the clothes to a large slab, and wringing out the water. Their muffled complaints and gossip—masked with reigned-in laughter to deflect from their dire situation—continue as the women make their way out to dry the clothes, on the bare land and hedgerows.

Lavanda

Every day wear and tear, along with sweat, body oils, and environmental substances, leads to unpleasant odours and unsightly stains on clothes and linens. These unhygienic fabrics become harborage sites for bacteria and microorganisms. Laundering—derived from the Latin word “lavanda,” meaning “things to be washed”—is essential for garments and linens. Proper laundering helps eliminate impurities and odours while preserving the integrity of the fabric.

Multigenerational inheritance

Exceptionally adverse life events can have a profound impact on individuals, leading them to grapple with trauma. Often, these individuals inherit their parents’ post-traumatic state, becoming reflections of them and perpetuating a cycle of multigenerational adversity.

Your ancestors, parents, siblings, and cousins may choose not to confront their issues. Instead, they live in secrecy, moral ambiguity, and complicity. This unresolved, dysfunctional, and damaging familial pathology is often placed upon you—the healthy one—who is expected to endure their cruelty and ignore their depravity. Meanwhile, those who are utterly evil and dysfunctional hide behind your strength, presenting themselves as virtuous or martyr-like.

As a result, you might unknowingly bear this burden, finding yourself derailed from a fulfilling life and forced to exist in a constant state of survival.

Ills infected and osmosis strengthened

Sickness thrives in unhealthy minds and sick bodies.

Sickness thrives in secrecy.

Sickness thrives in silence.

Sickness thrives in shame.

Most importantly, sickness flourishes in the solidarity of a spineless, sick society.

Those who contribute to this miasma—such as enablers, silencers, assaulters, slanderers, negators, spectators, justifiers, and shamers—are no different from the actual perpetrators. Miasma inhabitants are a mass of substandard cells, perpetuated through generations, filled with jealousy, deviance, immorality, cruelty, and cowardice. And with their infected minds, they will go to great lengths to silence your truth, invalidate your pain, and exacerbate your suffering.

Often, those who feel inadequate and shameful support abusers and criminals who wrong you, not out of admiration, but because they are envious of your essence and presence. By portraying you as deeply flawed, they can pretend to be fabulously blemish-free.

Unable to confront their own lives, burdened by feelings of worthlessness, immorality, and self-loathing, they rely on denial and blame—whether it be on God or societal norms, maintaining cycles of toxicity. Despite possessing “textbook” qualifications (solely to earn an income and fill their void with objects), being in convenience-based marriages, enjoying modern gadgets and comforts and participating in ineffective empowerment programs, they embody a lack. The good news is that you don’t need to concern yourself with their ancestors—the flawed and fearful are reflections of their ancestors.

Miasma inhabitants

The miasma inhabitants struggle to liberate themselves. Remaining unwashed over generations has left them accustomed to the stench, the secrets, and the shame surrounding them. And with their unwashed minds and unhygienic souls, they further merge into a collective identity, emitting a smell reminiscent of unembalmed corpses in shallow graves.

In this “bad-air”, two-faced substandard herd, psychological and emotional heaviness becomes an integral part of one’s identity, and they exist burdened by—

Lies

Bribes

Conspiracies

Masquerading

Silence

Powerlessness

You can sense the overwhelming weight of self-betrayal among the miasma inhabitants from afar, evident in their heavy-spirited anger and fragile, inflated ego.  Their smug expressions and buffoonish, loud laughter serve to mask their deep-seated shame.

Their jealousy and insecurity will make toxic individuals pull you down (Hello, crabs!); they will ignore you, downplay achievements and find new ways to sabotage your strength and growth. Despite appearing successful on the outside, their inner emptiness cannot stand the thought of anyone embracing life, being free, and expressing themselves openly.  While these individuals will praise the education system in Singapore, the cleanliness of Switzerland, and the beauty of Scotland, they will only do so as long as they can remain in the pits, nesting among their miasma inhabitants.

The soiled, silent and shackled are beyond redemption. Therefore, don’t continue to entrust your goodness to those who betray themselves. And refuse to fall in line, fit in and contribute to a dysfunctional family and a dysfunctional society. Existing on the surface while dying on the inside is not living. Your intrinsic worth cannot be built on the accumulated crimes and suffering of others, so don’t allow those who perpetuate harm to populate your internal world. Once you hit the flush on the miasma inhabitants from your past, don’t unflush—there is a reason human waste belongs in the sewage.

And since no one is coming to save you, support you, or, for that matter, to encourage you, it’s crucial to let go of what does not belong to you and regain your balance.

My five-part French laundry

PART 1: Take it head on.

Decide to be a cycle breaker and supersede the harmful mindset present among those who dwell in negativity and malice.

Acknowledge the pervasive repulsive odour of complicit criminality.

Feel the scale of compounded violence and loss of life.

Take your time to process reality.

Don’t seek anyone’s permission to reclaim your life.

PART 2: Roll up your sleeves.

Unload the reeking laundry.

Turn the soiled garments inside out.

Pretreat even the smallest stains using appropriate methods—calling out wrongdoing, issuing warnings, naming and shaming, filing FIRs, and taking action.

Remove the foul matter and stench from the threads. Employ the old-washed way to stun the hell out of the fibres—thrashing them over rocks, pounding them with a bat and scrubbing them with coarse-grained compounds to loosen the filth and ills, making depraved-cowardly perpetrators and miasma inhabitants unsalvageable.

Wash away generations of crimes, secrecy and shame.  Purge the parasitic influences that have posed as friends, neighbours, colleagues, and family members, who are soiled with jealousy, sexual deviance, inadequacy, shame, self-hate, and impotence—beyond repair.

Remember, practice makes perfect. You may not get everything right the first time, but with each act of justice, your sense of self-worth and dignity will grow stronger.

Wring the living daylights out of the fibres.

Burst the toxic positivity bubbles that pressure you to suppress honest feelings of numbness, sadness, anger, and grief. Instead, embrace your honest state.

PART 3: Hello sunshine!

Embrace the power of disinfecting sunlight—air dry your laundry in natural sunlight (whenever possible). Display your laundry in full view—one piece at a time—for anyone and everyone to see. This display not only showcases your fresh laundry but also symbolises the freedom to break free from generations of negativity and violence.

Use clean, sturdy laundry baskets to carry the dry clothes and linens.

PART 4: Create and immerse.

Enjoy the process of pressing. Notice the steam, feel the smoothness of the fabric, inhale the freshness, and appreciate the tranquillity.

Personalise a fragrance to spritz on your fresh laundry.

Fold your linens and store them in their designated spaces.

Hang your garments on matching hangers, arranging them in a coordinated and visually appealing manner.

Launder frequently.

PART 5: Celebrate your efforts in restoring your soul’s hygiene.

Maintain lightness.

Enjoy your newness.

Emphasise wellness.

A l’air

The billowing curtains announce the arrival of the sea breeze, which rolls in with a nuanced, layered fragrance, featuring notes of citrus, lavender, olive, salt, and earth. As the top note gradually dissipates, the heart notes emerge, seamlessly blending into the base notes.  Meanwhile, an invigorating scent of resinous and woody notes from distant burning wood floats alongside marine notes, gently enveloping the ambience.

A beautiful arrangement of fresh laundry hangs on the clothesline, set against the backdrop of towering limestone cliffs and turquoise waters. The fluttering fresh fabrics reveal a woman, dressed in a voile blouse and linen pants, accompanied by a pair of chatty tuxedo cats. This trio, communicating in their own unique languages, appears to understand each other purr-fectly.

As the woman approaches, she notices a young person placing a tall glass of lemonade by the outdoor ironing station, prompting her to break into a broad smile. “This is a special version—with hulled strawberries and mint—created in celebration of your ironing session and for adopting these munchkins. Do they follow you around like puppies or do they follow you around like puppies!” the young person exclaims cheerfully.

“Oh, Darling, it’s quite the opposite; they have adopted me,” the older woman declares, her gaze following the feline siblings who are now captivated by the chirping crickets near the trickling fountain. She hands the trug basket—filled with long-stemmed, fragrant flowers—to the younger person, who inhales the clean scent appreciatively. “I picked these for you; they’ll look splendid on your windowsill,” she offers, reaching for the refreshing drink. Glancing at the garnish of lavender sprig, she adds, “Trust your unerring attention to detail. Thank you, my love.” After taking a generous sip, the older woman presses the cool, damp surface against the nape of her neck, relishing the soothing sensory experience. “It doesn’t get better than this,” she remarks, referring to the stunning, tranquil setting.

The wicker basket, holding gleaming white cotton towels and muted lavender French linen napkins, sits beside the firm ironing table, with a well-maintained iron ready to press steam into life.
